In March 2020, we proudly became owners of a new VW T6 Achtung Campervan with Nature Lover conversion. We drove it from Geelong to Adelaide just before COVID-19 travel restrictions. After months of waiting, we finally had the chance to use it in mid-May for a 3-night stay at Mambray Creek campground in Mount Remarkable National Park. The campground is located 40km north of Port Pirie and 240km north of Adelaide, about a three-hour drive from our home. Pre-booking online is mandatory for all national park campsites in South Australia, and we selected site 46 with anticipation. We were pleased with the reality of the site upon arrival.
The unpowered campsites have two toilet blocks and a small shower block with satisfyingly hot water! Set within magnificent, remnant river red gums (some of the oldest trees in SA), the level surface provides privacy with well-spaced locations, though some sites near the shower block are better for caravans or quick stays.
The campground’s history as part of a sheep station adds interest, especially when walking to the Baroota ruins. Besides bushwalking tracks, one trail offers expansive views over the Spencer Gulf, with Whyalla visible in the distance. Longer hikes lead to Alligator Gorge or the town of Melrose at Mount Remarkable’s foot. We explored well-defined walks under 10km with some steep climbs, yet they were easy to navigate and added to our enjoyment.
During this first trip, we took the opportunity to thoroughly test our campervan’s features. This included the water usage, power consumption of the 65-litre fridge, and the comfort of the bed. It passed with flying colours! Initially, we decided against an attached awning due to height constraints for parking, we experimented with a free-standing Oztrail. Since we enjoy cooking and eating outside as much as possible, the shade structure proved to be a great addition that complemented the campervan experience. We’re excited to continue our adventures and make the most of our Achtung Campervan in the future!
During our camping experience, we rekindled our interests in sketching and photography, adding rejuvenation to our time. Eagerly, we anticipate more adventures in our Achtung Campervan!
