Bron’s Motorhome Holiday:
Happiness is a winter weekend without kids in an Achtung Camper Motorhome!
Winter camping in Victoria is certainly not something for the faint-hearted. Most folks usually don’t venture out camping when it’s cold and the mountain peaks are blanketed in snow. Although a weekend away in the Crafter was like being away in a cosy, warm cabin in the woods.
The First Day:
We ventured out on a cold, July winter’s day and wound our way slowly down the Great Ocean Road in the direction of Wye River. Our normal routine would be to stop for a hot lunch at one of the many beautiful cafes in Lorne. This time we decided to stop off at the spectacular Cathedrals surf spot. We pulled up the van, popped the Webasto diesel heater on and made a delicious soup while jazz played on the stereo, and the waves crashed down on the rocks below.
Continuing our journey, we headed to our destination, the breathtaking National Parks camping spot of Jamieson Creek. In simple terms, Jamieson Creek is a newly revamped camp-spot heaven, enveloped by towering eucalypts and offering jaw-dropping views of the beautiful coast, with Mount Defiance in the backdrop. Hidden away along the forested, rocky coastline, Jamieson Creek offered us a serene experience. As we strolled down to the rocky beach, we were accompanied by a pair of wallabies, and rainbows danced on the distant ocean swells. No matter how many times we’ve travelled this road, we will never tire of its sheer and utter beauty.
As dinner bubbled away, we sipped on a glass of red wine by the fire back at camp. Despite the rain, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Laguna table, taking advantage of the warm and comfortable confines of our van.
A quick wash-up, with hot water ready in only 5 minutes, and we lowered the bed from the ceiling, getting it ready for bedtime. As tired parents working full-time, the superb insulation of the van and its block-out blinds lowered. This coupled with the super comfy queen-size bed, allowed us to sleep for a record-breaking 11 hours!
The second day:
Waking refreshed to a freshly brewed hot coffee on the stove and bird song for company, life was good.
To summarise in only a few words:
The Achtung Crafter is a masterful piece of workmanship and design. Although it has a relatively short length, it still offers one of the best camping experiences you will ever have.
If you are considering a van for quick trips away or dreaming of doing a longer lap of Australia. This would be the van for you.
