One of Achtung Camper’s co-owners, Ronny Probandt, recently zipped away for a weekend to test drive our new Mercedes-Benz Vito Campervan. He had his side-kick with him, his daughter Layla and they set off for a few days exploring Port Campbell and Port Fairy.
The pair put the premium van to its test with driving, sleeping, cooking and camping. The Vito joins Achtung Camper’s product range that includes Volkswagen Transporters and Volkswagen Crafters to round off our campervans and motorhomes.
The rear-wheel drive van comes with plenty of features such as a digital rear-view window, driver fatigue monitor, and comprehensive safety features. The end result is a high-end vehicle that is converted with upholstery from Trimtech Interiors, fabric from Warwick Fabrics, Dometic refrigeration and the list goes on.
Here’s Ronny’s feedback.
How was the Vito’s general on-road performance?
The large diesel engine packs a punch and drives like a dream. It’s very powerful and handles well on the open road. It actually feels like a standard car.
How does the rear-wheel drive?
The rear-wheel drive definitely has its advantages. I liked it, and I presume that is what adds to its acceleration.
How was the fuel consumption?
Its fuel consumption is similar to the Volkswagen Transporter. It would be approximately 950km, and sit around the 6.6 to 6.8 litre mark.
How was the digital rear-view camera and mirror?
This is a cool feature! It was great to utilise whilst driving.
Anything else you would like to share from your test drive?
Driver Lane Assist is a brilliant feature and works like a gem. I’m also a big fan of the adjustable head rest, length of the seat and foot handbrake. It provides more space between the driver and passenger seats.
The EcoHeat Smart Touch induction cooker worked well. It heated up water, and cooked breakfast via the inverter with no issues.
Summary
Overall, Ronny was impressed with the Vito’s driving capabilities, fuel consumption and extra safety features. He gives it his stamp of approval.
