Van Features: The Capabilities of Front-Wheel Drive

Van shopping isn’t always simple! There are many decisions and features to consider and one that is key is whether to opt for front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD). A FWD format is where the engine and transmission drive the front wheels, as opposed to the rear wheels.

In the landscape of vans, FWD options are having their time in the spotlight, gaining in popularity and there are a few reasons why that is the case.

Benefits/advantages of a front-wheel drive van:

Improves fuel economy – the engine’s exhaust power is used for the forward motion rather than turning the wheels. The driveshaft is shorter, therefore making the vehicle lighter and reducing fuel consumption.

Improves traction – FWD construction places the heaviest components over the tyres, which increases traction on slippery surfaces. It also means there is less risk of losing control.

Easier to design and build – FWD vans tend to be cheaper to make as there are fewer components.

Efficient – FWD vans are pushed rather than pulled which makes it easier to dislodge from drifts or challenging spaces.

Maximise space – due to the engine being located in the front it frees up interior space for passengers and luggage, providing more cab room because there is no interior humps. Balanced weight distribution – onboard luggage is more evenly distributed within the van.

Lower in height – FWD vans are often lower in height, which makes it easier for loading or unloading. Also, it is easier to climb on board, as well as out of.

Underfloor space – FWD vans have more space available for equipment such as fuel tanks.

There you have it, we definitely think a front-wheel drive is an option to consider and both Crafters and Transporters offer the front-wheel drive option.

Unfortunately, due to a parts shortage in Europe 4MOTIONs are not available at present. Keep checking in to see when they will return to our shores. Currently, all Achtung Camper vans are front-wheel drive.
