Campervan Electrics: The Difference Between 12 Volt and 240 Volt

Understanding the difference between 240 volt and 12 volt electrical systems in Achtung Camper Campervans is important. Actually, it is essential as it could be a cost-saving exercise.

In this blog post, we’ll explain the distinction between 240 volt and 12 volt power in campervans and caravans, enabling you to make informed decisions about your electrical set-up.

The first difference is their voltage measurement. Voltage is the pressure of the power and it is measured in volts. The other obvious difference is their plug-in interface. Let’s break it down!

240 Volt Power:

240 volt power is the standard electrical power supply found in homes. It powers household appliances through rectangular double powerpoint sockets. However, in a campervan or caravan, you can only use 240 volt power when your vehicle is connected to an external power source, such as a main supply via a caravan park. To utilise the 240 volt outlets, when camping off-grid, you’ll need an inverter, which we offer as an add-on option.

12 Volt Power:

In contrast to 240 volt power, you can use a 12 volt power supply without plugging your campervan into an external source. It operates directly from your van’s built-in leisure battery. Interestingly, fridges, TVs, LED lights, portable 12 volt camping showers, and your van’s USB ports run on 12 volt power. The outlets for 12 volt power resemble car cigarette lighter sockets.

Considerations for 12 Volt Appliances:

It’s important to be cautious with appliances that are traditionally designed for 240 volt power but have been modified for use in the camping industry with 12 volt compatibility. For instance, a 12 volt kettle may take significantly longer to boil water and drain a substantial amount of power from your main battery. Similarly, some mini 12 volt hairdryers may not perform as efficiently as their 240 volt counterparts. It’s highly advisable to inquire about the performance of 12 volt camping items before making a purchase, as sometimes it may be more practical to stick with traditional methods.

Recapping, 240 volt power will only be active when hooked up to a main power supply (or if you opt to have an inverter in your van for off-grid camping), whilst your 12 volt power comes from the built-in leisure battery, therefore your fridge, lights, USB ports and TV do not need mains power to operate. Also, be aware of your appliances’ power requirements and consider efficient 12 volt modifications for optimal campervan electrics.
